The South Dakota School for the Deaf (SDSD) provides comprehensive evaluations in the areas of Academic, Social/Emotional, Behavioral, Cognitive, Transition, Audiology, Speech and Language for children with a hearing loss. These services are also available (through referral by local school districts or parents) to deaf or hard of hearing students who do not attend SDSD. They are offered on a consultation basis and may include complete evaluation, or any combination of assessments to address specific referral questions or concerns.

EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT SERVICES
Students referred to SDSD receive an initial assessment which includes the following: social summary, educational assessment, psychological/developmental assessment, audiological assessment, speech and language assessment, and review of medical records. The information compiled through this Pre-Evaluation Assessment provides the basis for recommendations regarding educational placement and special support services required to best serve the individual student. Results and recommendations are discussed with the student’s parents and placement team. Ongoing assessment services are provided as needed, and may include speech, language and communication skills assessment, audiological assessment, hearing aid/cochlear implant/FM system evaluation, needs assessment, psychoeducational assessment and vocational evaluation.

 EDUCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Education and technical assistance provides information and resources to local school districts, teachers, professionals and parents, relating to services that support educational programming for deaf and hard of hearing students. SDSD provides services to all children regardless of communication modality, including assessment of deaf and hard of hearing students, educational consulting, and assistance with curriculum development. SDSD also offers workshops and training to professionals, paraprofessionals, support staff and parents.
