SDSD Educational Programs
The provision of educational programs available at SDSD is guided by the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), as required by state and federal legislation. To the maximum extent deemed appropriate by the IEP team, each student’s educational program is designed to expose him or her to the information and skills needed to master the South Dakota Content Standards. For more information on the standards, access www.state.sd.us/deca/ To achieve mastery of standards, SDSD has primarily adopted commerical curriculum as well as other supplemental curricula such as Accelerated Reading and Math Facts in a Flash. Because some students at SDSD have unique needs, additional curricular resources have been adopted or are being developed. For example, many SDSD students receive speech language therapy and auditory training. In addition, SDSD staff are involved in the review, selection, and development of curriculum in American Sign Language, Deaf History, and Deaf Culture.
SDSD staff and parents are very proud of the two options that are available for children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. These platforms are the Bilingual Education platform and the Auditory/Oral platform. The selection of a platform is based on each student’s current communication strengths and weaknesses as well as parental preference.
